At Drifter, we believe building your custom campervan should feel like the start of the journey—not a hurdle. Our process is clear, collaborative, and surprisingly simple, from first design conversation to the moment you turn the key.
So what does the Drifter Vans process look like? Let’s take a look.
1. Discovery Call &
Estimate consultation
The journey begins with a 15-minute discovery call, which you can easily book through our website or by giving us a call. You’ll speak directly with Paul, our founder, who will take the time to understand your needs, preferences, and budget.
From there, we’ll walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you decide whether one of our Signature Layouts or a fully custom build is the best fit for the way you want to travel. If it feels like the right match, we’ll then schedule a one-hour video consultation to explore layouts, features, and details in depth and create a tailored estimate for your build.
After your personalized estimate is complete, a $5,000 deposit secures your place in our production schedule and allows us to move forward with your van—whether that means ordering a new Transit or Sprinter from our local dealership or helping you find the right van.
From there, you’ll begin working directly with one of our interior designers and our design team to refine every detail of your build. Whether it’s materials, finishes, layout adjustments, or added systems like solar, air conditioning, or off-grid power, we’ll help you explore each option to bring your vision to life.

Whether you choose a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter, we’ll help you source the right vehicle through our network of trusted Detroit auto dealers—often with access to competitive pricing and current-year models.

4. Interior design
Now it’s time to make your van feel like home. You’ll work one-on-one with a professional interior designer, collaborating on the colors, materials, layout, and style that reflect your personality and lifestyle.
Every client is different—and so is every build. Share your inspirations, and our designer will craft custom mood boards tailored to your taste. From modern minimalism to rustic charm, this is where your custom camper van interior design takes shape.
After your initial deposit, we’ll schedule a detailed planning session to walk through your full build—making sure every element is clear, intentional, and aligned with your vision.
Approximately two months before your scheduled build date, we’ll collect a 50% progress payment so we can begin ordering materials and locking in key components. A second progress payment of 25% is due around the halfway point of your build, with the final 25% balance due upon completion, when your van is ready for pickup.
4. Payment Schedule
Once your van is delivered to our shop—or picked up by our team from the dealer—the real magic begins. Depending on your chosen layout, features, and any custom upgrades, the build typically takes three to 4 months to complete.
Throughout the process, you’ll receive weekly progress updates with photos, allowing you to watch your van come to life—one handcrafted detail at a time.
