We’ve streamlined the experience into a simple, five-step process—from vision to van. Here’s how it works:
At Drifter, we believe that building your custom camper van should be an adventure—collaborative, simple, and fun. That’s why we’ve refined our camper van build process to make it not only stress-free, but something you genuinely enjoy. From your first design call to the final delivery, our goal is to make the van build journey as rewarding as the road ahead.
Because as any van life traveler will tell you, it’s not just about the destination—it’s about how you get there.
So what does the Drifter Vans process look like? Let’s take a look.
1. Initial Consult
The journey begins with a personalized video consultation, which you can easily book through our website or by giving us a call. You’ll meet directly with our founder, Paul, or a member of our experienced team, who will take the time to understand your needs, preferences, and budget.
We’ll walk you through your options, answer any questions, and help you explore whether one of our Signature Collection models or a Custom van build is the best fit for your lifestyle.
Once you’ve selected your preferred model and design features, we’ll provide a personalized estimate. When you're ready to move forward, a $5,000 deposit secures your place in our production schedule.
From there, you’ll begin working directly with one of our interior designers to shape the look, feel, and functionality of your van. Whether it’s materials, finishes, layout tweaks, or added systems like solar, air conditioning, or off-grid power—we’ll help you explore every customization option to bring your vision to life.

Whether you choose a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter, we’ll help you source the right vehicle through our network of trusted Detroit auto dealers—often with access to competitive pricing and current-year models.
Not sure where to start? We’ll guide you through the entire process, ensuring you get a van that aligns perfectly with your build, timeline, and budget.
After your initial deposit, we’ll schedule a detailed planning session to walk through your full build—ensuring every element is clear and aligned with your vision.
Approximately two months before your scheduled build date, we’ll collect a 50% progress payment to begin ordering materials and locking in components. Once the final build contract is signed, we’re ready to bring your dream camper van to life.

Now it’s time to make your van feel like home. You’ll work one-on-one with a professional interior designer, collaborating on the colors, materials, layout, and style that reflect your personality and lifestyle.
Every client is different—and so is every build. Share your inspirations, and our designer will craft custom mood boards tailored to your taste. From modern minimalism to rustic charm, this is where your custom camper van interior design takes shape.
Once your van is delivered to our shop—or picked up by our team from the dealer—the real magic begins. Depending on your chosen model, features, and any custom upgrades, the build typically takes up to three months to complete.
Throughout the process, you’ll receive weekly progress updates with photos, allowing you to watch your van come to life—one handcrafted detail at a time.
