Ford assembly line in Michigan in the early automobile era

MADE IN MICHIGAN · METRO DETROIT

Made In Michigan

Drifter builds in Southfield, on Telegraph Road, in the region that industrialized the automobile and never stopped building it. The trades a coachbuilt campervan requires were trained here by a century of the work.

Ford Motor Company

Henry Ford. Henry Ford incorporates Ford Motor Company in Detroit — the third car company he'd tried to launch, and the first to last. It's the company that will put the country on wheels and bind the industry to Detroit for good.

Body by Fisher.

The Fisher brothers come from carriage-making and put a coach on their emblem. Detroit's body builders — Fisher, Briggs, Dietrich — craft what the chassis makers don't: body, trim, interior. The coachbuilder's split between chassis and body happens here at industrial scale.

General Motors

The region's plants and trades retool for the war effort. The proof holds: this workforce can build whatever is asked of it.

Drifter

Detroit doesn't build to impress. Detroit builds to last. Trim shops measure twice. Fabricators take the extra hour. Engineers tell you what won't work before they tell you what will.

That's the standard a Drifter is built to. It's the standard the city taught us.

Drifter is proud to be built here. There's no better place to be built.

Why the vans are built here.

A coachbuilt campervan needs the trades the auto industry trained: fabrication, wiring, joinery, upholstery, finish. In metro Detroit those are not specialties to recruit for. They are the local economy. The people on Drifter's production floor learned the work in the region that invented the scale of it. At Drifter they apply it to twenty-four vans a year instead of twenty-four thousand.

The crest's 26 stars are coordinates. They mark where the first Drifter was built: Michigan. Every van that leaves carries them.
