Living in a van can be a grueling adjustment for some, and the greatest adventure for others; and possibly a little bit of both! How do you know if you’re ready for full-time van life? Will you be having more of the former experiences or the latter? We’ve put together a little quiz for you to see if you’re truly ready for life on the road.

Are you ready to make some significant sacrifices for van life?

If yes, you’re ready for van life. Sacrifices include, but are not limited to, community, personal space (especially if embarking on this path with a partner!), comforts that an apartment or house bring, stability, security (in terms of personal belongings, finances and physical safety), personal hygiene, privacy and being a quick drive away from seeing close friends and family. Of course there are ways to minimize these sacrifices and make living in a van work for you; people do it everyday! However, it is important to keep in mind that it isn’t always fairytales and rainbows. There are sacrifices to be made, both known and unknown! Now that we’ve gotten the heavy stuff out of the way, let’s move on to the more technical aspects.

Are you fully insured?

If yes, you’re ready for van life. Getting campervan Insurance may seem like an inconvenience and possibly outside of your budget, but without it you’re risking a whole lot - like your whole material life AND your van! Vehicular accidents aren’t the only issue here, a breakdown or two are bound to happen when driving so often and such far distances. The worst case scenario is just a probability equation away - so make sure to get the best coverage you can afford and to include roadside assistance!

Is the free-spirited, easy-going side of you easily accessible?

If yes, you’re ready for van life. There are no certainties when it comes to driving around the world in a man made machine; you have to be able to roll with the ebbs and flows. If you don’t, you will find yourself having an extremely hard time and, eventually, having an extremely bad time. Set yourself up for success by not putting too many expectations on yourself or your experiences and be open to all of the wonders van life has to offer - both the good and the bad! After all, the bad are just part of the learning curve!

Are you prepared to make money on the road (or blessed with not having to worry about it)?

If yes, you’re ready for van life. In addition to our blog on remote work that you can find, there is also something called workamping that could help you greatly reduce costs of living. All workamping employers provide free parking and depending on which one you choose, they could also include luxuries such as laundry facilities, pools and hot tubs, game rooms, activity centers, showers, full hook-ups, water, and some even provide payment or stipends.

Deciding how much money you need will drastically vary depending on how often you move around (gas money, potential breakdowns) and what kind of lifestyle you want to give yourself. You can make either end of the spectrum work for you, just be prepared to do so!

Are you ready to toss rent or mortgage payments to the wind and live according to mere gas prices?

If yes, you’re ready for van life. No more lining the pockets of landlords and bankers and more lining your life with fulfilling ventures and stunning sceneries. Obviously there are costs involved in living in a mobile home, but nothing compared to rent, mortgage payments, car payments, house and car insurance, land maintenance, utility and water bills, etc. You could save a ton of money by switching to the van lifestyle while also giving yourself the freedom to an incredible gift of seeing our beautiful world.

It may not be the easiest, or the most comfortable lifestyle, but for those that make the effort, it is worth every single inconvenience and hiccup - three times over!
