Van Life Tips For Couples

Updated: Apr 13, 2023

Traveling can have its difficulties. However, traveling as a couple in a VAN can have some challenges along the way.

There’s no doubt that van life is full of adventure and opportunities you’ll want to experience with your partner! When you tell people you live in a van with your significant other, you might get a lot of “How do you do it?” kind of questions. Well, if you are wondering how to manage time with your partner and yourself while living in a van, this post is for you.

Living in a small space, especially with your partner, is a huge adjustment. Is it possible? YES. Here are a few tips for living on the road with your partner:

1. Communication Is Key

An obvious reminder, but again, this is something every couple should be strong at. Communicating goes hand in hand with everything about being in a relationship. Things will happen and it’s crucial to talk them out and listen to your partners concerns. Figure out a solution to the problems by communicating in a respectful way and things will get easier living on the road together!

2. Take On Problems Together

Van life isn’t always perfect. Things happen, stuff breaks and you won’t get by fixing them by yourself. As a couple, you should be experiencing these things as one. Even if something happens and you don’t know what to do in the situation, being supportive with your other partner is important!

3. Take Time For Yourself

Most people work full-time and live in an environment where you have a choice to move into another room to do your own thing. If you’re living in a van, going into another room is less likely an option. All of a sudden you’re spending A LOT more time with your partner.

We all need space. It’s important to set aside time for yourself daily. Go outside, head to a cafe, go for a run, read at the park, do yoga… whatever you enjoy, take time for yourself.

4. Plan Date Nights

Even when living in a van together, it’s important to set aside time to go out as a couple. Whatever that means for you two, if you both enjoy dressing up and going out, or planning a picnic at a scenic spot. Most of the time when you live in a van, you get comfortable with the every day travel. Setting aside time for romance is always important for a couple!

5. Budgeting

Before setting out on a road trip with your partner, making a budget plan can make clear and realistic expectations when spending money. Avoid those awkward conversations about spending and talk about bills and expenses.

Van life isn’t always easy but the experiences are once in a lifetime. You and your partner will be talking about it for the rest of your lives. So live in the moment and embrace the unknown.
