Custom Campervan Build Process: Inside the Drifter Production Process

From the outside, custom campervans can feel like a mystery.
People see the finished builds—the quiet details, the considered materials, the way light moves through a space that somehow feels like home. But they don't always see the path that brought it there. The conversations. The decisions. The slow, deliberate work of turning an idea into a one-of-one coach built to travel.
So let's pull back the curtain.
Here's what our production process actually looks like—from the first conversation to the moment you drive away.

Step 1: Discovery Call & Estimate Consultation
Every Drifter journey begins with a short conversation.
The discovery call is fifteen minutes. No pressure, no pitch—just a chance to see if we're a good fit for each other. We'll talk about how you plan to use your campervan, what kind of timeline you're imagining, which chassis might work best, and what matters most to you.
If Drifter feels right, we schedule a one-hour video consultation. This is where we go deeper—layouts, systems, finishes, expectations. Everything we need to create a tailored proposal with a real estimate.
From there, we schedule a follow-up call to walk through that proposal together. No surprises. Just clarity.
What the $5,000 Deposit Actually Starts
When you decide to move forward, the $5,000 deposit marks a real beginning.
This isn't a holding fee. It's the moment your build enters our production process:
Your place in the current Collection Series is reserved
Your commissioned coach officially enters the queue
Design, chassis coordination, and scheduling begin moving in parallel
From this point forward, people, materials, and timelines start aligning around your build.
Step 2: Secure Your Build & Begin Design

With your slot secured, we move into focused design and coordination—and your private Owner Studio becomes the central hub for everything that follows.
Inside your portal, you'll see:
Interior design selections
Van order status
Key documents
Photo updates from the workshop
A clear checklist showing exactly where you are in the process
No matter where you live, Owner Studio keeps you connected—and keeps every detail organized in one place.
From here, you'll refine your layout and key interior and exterior elements directly with Paul, one of the owners of Drifter, along with our Production Designer and Master Builders.
At the same time, you'll work with a personal Interior Designer who shapes every inch of the space—materials, cabinetry faces, colors, finishes, lighting, window treatments, and the personal details that make your coach unmistakably yours.
In parallel, we coordinate ordering your Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter through our trusted dealer partners. This allows chassis, design, and production planning to move forward together—so no single piece has to wait for another.
Once everything is organized and the build is ready to transition into production, you'll work with Kim, co-owner of Drifter and your Project Manager. Kim reviews your build in full—layout, pricing, options, upgrades, interior design selections—verifying every detail before materials are ordered and your van moves to the production floor.

Step 3: Crafting Your Coach

Once your design is approved and your chassis arrives, your van enters the heart of our production process.
Inside the workshop, Master Builders, electricians, and systems specialists move through a disciplined sequence:
Structure
Systems
Cabinetry
Finishes
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is improvised. Every cut, wire, panel, and surface is checked against your plan—with an eye for both function and restraint.
This is where Drifter Coachcraft shows up. Not as an idea, but as execution.
Completion & Delivery
When your custom coach is complete, we bring everything together in a calm, thorough handover.
You have two options:
In-person delivery — Travel to the Drifter workshop in Detroit for a hands-on experience with the team who built your van.
White-glove delivery — Your coach is brought to you with a dedicated technician who walks you through every system in your own driveway.
Either way, we take the time to demonstrate how everything works. We answer every question until you feel completely at home.
You'll step into ownership with DrifterCare support—warranty coverage designed for custom coaches—and the confidence that your van has been built, tested, and refined for real travel. Not just for the showroom floor.
Why Our Production Process Matters
Custom means change.
Layouts evolve. Preferences shift. New ideas surface midstream. That's the nature of building something that's truly yours.
But change only works when it's guided by a process built to handle it.
That's why our production process exists—to protect the design, the craftsmanship, and the ownership experience from the first call to the first thousand miles.
Every Drifter coach follows this path. Every build is intentional. Every step is designed to make sure your coach feels composed, considered, and truly yours.
